Anxiety and Depression

Although the assessment process can be tailor-made for each individual, an outline of a typical process is provided below.

During the initial interview you will meet with the assessing psychologist who will talk about your concerns regarding your child.  By providing relevant background information and previously obtained reports and assessments, we are able to tailor the assessment process to your needs.  Most often children are not required at this initial interview as it allows parents and carers to speak openly about their concerns and their hopes for the assessment process.

Depending on the age of your child and the specific concerns, there are times when a school observation is recommended.  This typically involves the assessing psychologist organising to visit your child's school in order to observe them within a school context.  This also provides an opportunity to meet with the teacher and gain insight into how they are functioning within the classroom and playground.  Our assessing psychologists have also worked as school teachers and so are particularly comfortable engaging with schools and teachers.

The assessment process is typically a two hour period of face-to-face interaction with the psychologist.  During this time a number of standardised tests are completed.  The most commonly used tests are the Wechsler Intelligence Test for Children (WISC-V) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III).  These tests allow us to assess cognitive functioning and better understand your child's academic performance, identifying possible learning difficulties.

The feedback session is the final appointment where a completed assessment report is provided and this is discussed in detail.  At themindspace educational we are passionate about ensuring that the report you leave with makes sense to you.  It is crucial that you understand the information in the report and also that the provided recommendations make sense, are evidence-based, and are achievable.
